Practitioners of Modern Steam
There were only a small number of engineers in the second half of the 20th century whose belief in a future for steam traction was robust enough for them to combine current scientific and engineering knowledge to design or modify steam locomotives to deliver levels of performance, efficiency and/or operating costs that were unheard of in the heyday of steam.
Their number include the following:
- André Chapelon (1892 – 1978)
- Livio Dante Porta (1922 – 2003)
- Dave Wardale
- Phil Girdlestone (1954 – 2016)
- Roger Waller
- Shaun McMahon (1964 – 2022)
- Nigel Day
- Ian Gaylor
- Manuel Ramos
- Ian Screeton
- Doug Landa (c1937 – 2026)
